Women's health beyond International Women's Day 2024

A celebration of strength and a call to action

As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024, it's crucial to spotlight the unique health challenges women face across Europe and globally. This day isn't just about acknowledging achievements; it's also about addressing disparities and pushing for more inclusive healthcare solutions that consider women's specific needs.

Beyond reproductive health: a wider lens on International Women's Day 2024

While diseases like breast and cervical cancer are often at the forefront of discussions on women's health, other conditions disproportionately affect women and deserve equal attention:

  • Cardiovascular diseases: Women exhibit different heart disease symptoms than men, leading to under diagnosis and under treatment.

  • Mental health: Women are more prone to experience depression and anxiety, compounded by social pressures and, at times, postpartum conditions.

  • Osteoporosis: Predominantly affecting women, this condition underscores the need for awareness around bone health, especially post-menopause.

  • Autoimmune diseases: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis affect more women than men, pointing to a gender gap in autoimmune research and treatment.

The role of socioeconomic factors

Access to healthcare remains a significant issue, with socioeconomic factors creating barriers that prevent many women from receiving the care they need. From rural areas lacking specialized services to the socioeconomic divides that impact health education and preventive care, the challenges are as diverse as the women they affect.

Comportment Towards Diseases

Research suggests several key differences in how women and men approach health. Women tend to be more proactive in preventative care, seeking doctor visits and screenings more frequently. However, they may also underreport symptoms and prioritize the health of others before their own. Men, on the other hand, might delay seeking help until symptoms become severe.

Curewiki: bridging the gap
